About this year's camp theme: Fit for the Kingdom
Physical fitness is a universally admirable trait. We all know the discipline and sacrifice it takes to be physically fit––early mornings or late nights at the gym, strict diets, regular bedtimes. Many of us may have even anticipated 2022 to be the year when we fulfilled this resolution, only to be left in the guilt of yet again delaying fitness until 2023. For most, the journey to physical fitness is grueling. It’s a long road, more about consistency than it is about intensity, more about endurance and commitment than it is about motivation. There is no such thing as immediate results. Fitness is a game of patience, trusting that even before your goals have been realized, your work is not in vain.
In many ways, physical fitness is perceived as the pinnacle of self-discipline. The self-discipline grown through physical training is often transferrable to other sectors of life––discipline in work, discipline in school, discipline in relationships. In fact, the immense value of physical fitness is no secret, and everyone has some level of fitness they want to achieve. Yet, the Bible has a shocking perspective to share: “…exercise yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:7b-8, NKJV). In comparison to physical fitness, spiritual fitness is far greater, and in light of the glory of spiritual fitness, physical training is minimized to just “a little” profit.
The value of spiritual fitness is not nearly as obvious to the world. Spiritual fitness is intangible; it is not physically apparent. Rather than physical appearance, it is reflected in character––in godliness. The promise of discipline training and exercise towards godliness is monumental, not only valuable in this life, but in the life to come! Meanwhile, physical fitness is fleeting, deteriorating with old age. But godliness has eternal rewards.
Like physical fitness, the journey to spiritual fitness is much easier said than done. But, unlike physical fitness, the training required to spiritual fitness is substantially more difficult. It’s a marathon we cannot physically see, scattered with far more hurdles and resistance. Spiritual fitness requires us to defy the world’s standards in pursuit of God’s. It requires us to sacrifice selfish worldly priorities in exchange for godly priorities. But most of all, spiritual fitness requires us to not look back. In the words of Jesus, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62, NKJV).
Join EastVAY camp this year as we explore what it means to be spiritually fit and the value of spiritual fitness. We will learn how to recognize and overcome our shortcomings and sins, how to live holy in a world that minimizes sin, and how we can stand firm in our convictions to pursue godliness, despite worldly pressures. We’ll learn how to embrace a heavenly, eternal mindset and internalize it––to make what we cannot physically see real and tangible in our lives.
